NEC Develops Image Compression Technology for Handset Displays
June 30, 2006
NEC has developed a new technology for image compression on mobile phone displays. This technology is able to reduce image data processed by the display circuit to two-thirds of the present amount while barely compromising the image quality. Handset displays can thus produce 16 million colors with the same circuit size now capable of only 260,000 colors. NEC plans to commercialize its new technology in 2006 at the earliest.
