Toshiba announced on June 5 that it will start mass-producing 2.5-inch HDDs with 200GB storage capacity starting in August. Using perpendicular magnet recording technology, Toshiba's new HDD is 9.5mm thick and weighs 98 grams. This new HDD is expected to find use in high-end notebook PCs with multimedia features. Monthly capacity will initially be 20,000 units and will be provided by the company's plant in western Tokyo. Toshiba also intends to produce a 0.85-inch HDD in the future using the aforementioned technology.
