Hitachi to Boost 3.5-Inch HDD Capacity in China
April 21, 2006
Japanese Hitachi has announced that it will shorten the timetable of its capacity expansion plan for 3.5-inch hard drives produced in China by one or two months. After the expansion, Hitachi's Chinese plant will have a monthly capacity of one million units by the end of 2006, and is projected to produce 70 million units annually by 2008. This move is part of Hitachi's plan to increase its global output by 20% annually, up to 200 million units in 2011. Due to the growth in the DVD recorder market, Hitachi will focus on production of 3.5-inch HDDs intended for consumer electronics products, and expects these drives to account for 30% of its total shipment after five years, up from the current 10%.
