Launch of SED TVs by Toshiba, Canon Delayed until Late 2007
March 10, 2006
Toshiba and Cannon have announced that they will postpone the rollout of their jointly developed SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) flat-panel TVs until late 2007. Originally the two companies had planned for a release in early 2006, but due to the unexpected fierce price competition between LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and PDP (Plasma Display Panel) TVs they have decided to postpone the launch, in order to improve production technology and make these TVs more cost competitive. Toshiba and Canon started trial production of the SED TVs in August 2005 at a Canon factory in Hiratsuka, Japan, and production was also expected to start at a Toshiba plant in Himeji, Japan in January 2007, but it has now been decided that this date will be pushed back until the summer of 2007. SED TVs consume considerably less power than PDP and LCD TVs, but their picture quality is close to that of CRT TVs.
