AMTC Develops 5G CF; Half Output Scheduled for AUO
December 15, 2005
Taiwanese CF (Color Filter) maker AMTC has improved the resist used in 3.5G and 4G CF and developed 5G CF by applying the resist without spinning, which is the traditional way of coating resist on CF. This method will equip AMTC with the competency of developing large-sized CF, which can then be applied to large displays, allowing them to better compete with Taiwanese Toppan CFI and Sintek. AMTC plans to start mass production on the 5G CF in February 2006, expecting to achieve a monthly capacity of 10,000 units in July 2006, reaching a maximum of 70,000 units in late 2006.

On December 12 AUO announced that they had signed a five-year contract with AMTC. Under the agreement, which lasts till 2011, AMTC will supply AUO with half of its monthly capacity for use in about 35,000 substrates. The reason for the long-term contract is that AUO will be able to produce as many as 170,000 substrates in its 5G line by the end of 2005. In addition, by the time InfoVision Optoelectronics, Shanghai SVA-NEC, and BOE in China reach their scheduled output, 5G CF is likely to see supply shortage as these companies lack in-house CF supply.
