On October 17 Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology, a joint venture between Toshiba and Matsushita, announced it has developed an 11.1-inch LCD panel equipped with an LED backlight instead of cold cathode fluorescent lighting, aimed towards use in notebook PCs. The panel is only 2.75mm thick while weighing 146 grams, with both measurements representing significant drops in comparison with existing notebook PC panels. The panel is already incorporated in Sony's VAIO type T notebook PCs, which hit the market in September.
