Omron has developed new backlight technology for LCD panels used in handsets and digital cameras, doubling the brightness beyond current panels. With this technology, a 2-inch panel can achieve a brightness of 20000cd/m2, making it more convenient for outdoor viewing while addressing the high contrast requirement of TV handsets. Sample shipment of panels using this technology, up to three inches, are expected to kick off in early 2006 with mass production in mid-2006.
