Sharp announced on Monday October 3 that it has developed an LCD panel for use in the broadcasting and movie industries with a contrast ratio of one million to one. Until now, these industries have mainly used CRT displays which have contrast ratios of 10,000-100,000 to one. The new high-contrast panel technology is dubbed Mega Contrast, and the company will bring the panel to the market in the fiscal year 2006. The new LCD panel will not be introduced in the consumer market, as it is only meant for use in professional darkrooms in the aforementioned industries. The market for these high-contrast panels is estimated at about 20 billion Yen a year.
