Hitachi and NTT Develop New 3D LCD
September 16, 2005
According to a statement by Hitachi Display and NTT IT, the two companies have developed a display panel for 3D images, which projects an image with different degrees of brightness on two LCDs in order to create spatial effects. This is possible because brighter objects look closer to the human eye. Existing 3D displays project different images on each eye to create the impression of 3D. The companies claim that the new technology causes far less eyestrain, even when viewing for extended periods of time.

The two companies said they will start marketing a 9-inch sample in October, which is 1.8 times more expensive than regular LCD panels. Mass production will start in April 2006. The companies hope to get the LCD panel integrated in game consoles, mobile phones, and car systems.
