Sharp Considers Retreating From Rear-Projection TV Market
September 09, 2005

Sharp is considering withdrawing from the rear-projection TV market as the cost of LCD TVs and plasma TVs keeps falling. Sharp's rear-projection TVs, only sold in the U.S., account for less than 5% of total revenue. Although the U.S. sees high demand for 45" and even 65" LCD TVs, Sharp can only ship roughly 400 units of the latter annually. According to Sharp, the LCD TV market is expected to comprise 13% of the global TV sales by March 2006, growing to 20 million units, with the remaining market divvied by CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TVs and large plasma TVs.
