TDK to Produce Thinnest Visible Light Sensor for Handsets
August 19, 2005
TDK announced it has developed the thinnest visible light sensor for mobile phones, as the company uses a plastic substrate instead of a glass substrate in the production process. The new sensor measures 2mm x 1.5mm and is only 0.25mm thick, whereas previous ones were 0.6mm thick. Visible light sensors are able to detect the level of ambient light and adjust the brightness of mobile phone displays accordingly. TDK will use existing equipment for production, which is expected to start in December 2005. Initial production is set at 100,000 units per month, growing to 500,000 units in the following months.
