Sharp to Increase Output of LCD Panels
July 28, 2005
According to a report by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Sharp will increase its LCD panel production capacity at its plant in Kameyama, Japan by the fall of 2005. The plant in Kameyama currently manufactures 45,000 6G glass substrates per month, but this number will rise to 50,000 once the production capacity has been upgraded. These glass substrates are used to produce 26- to 65-inch LCD panels, and the company hopes to increase its annual production of 32-inch LCD panels from 4.3 million units to 4.8 million. Sharp will not make any new investments to increase production capacity, but instead will improve the efficiency of existing equipment. It forecasts that worldwide demand for LCD televisions will grow by 80% to 15 million units in the fiscal year 2005, which ends in March 2006.
