Pioneer recently has started mass production on plasma panels which are compatible with high-definition image quality standards. Pioneer will use the new panels for its own branded televisions, but it will also supply them to other makers. 50-inch televisions using the new panels will be on sale in August 2005. The company uses a process which has improved emission efficiency, making panels 20% brighter than current models and providing four times as much contrast. Overall the company forecasts that in the fiscal year 2005 it will ship a total of 800,000 plasma panels, which includes both previous and next-generation models. This is double the number of plasma panels it shipped in the fiscal year 2004.
