June 17, 2005
According to JEITA, the estimated worldwide demand for plasma televisions in fiscal 2004, which ends in March 2005, stood at 2.32 million units. It forecasts that this number will grow by 59% to 3.7 million units in fiscal 2005. Three large Japanese panel television makers have released projected sales figures for fiscal 2005, which are quite aggressive in comparison to JEITA's worldwide projections. Matsushita, Hitachi and Pioneer combined expect to sell 3.07 million plasma televisions in the fiscal year 2005, which would mean annual growth of 140%.

Matsushita plans to sell two million plasma televisions worldwide in fiscal 2005, a large increase in comparison with 710,000 units it sold in fiscal 2004.Hitachi's worldwide sales target is 570,000 units for fiscal 2005, which if met would mean an increase by almost 100% in comparison with the 300,000 units in fiscal 2004. Pioneer plans to increase shipment of plasma display panels to 500,000 units in fiscal 2005, which are mainly used for its own plasma televisions. This would mean an annual increase by 79%.
