Display - AUO Prepares Capacity for Larger Bite into LCD TV Panel Market
June 09, 2005
Mass production on AUO's sixth-generation production line is on schedule. With yield rates rising faster than expected, the line will be able to take on 30,000 substrates per month by June, after which the maker also hopes to expand the line's capacity by 10,000 to 15,000 substrates each month. Plans are to tackle opportunities in the 32" and 37" LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV panel market.

Officials at AUO acknowledge that there exists a tight substrate supply for plants fifth-generation and above. Stronger demand for LCD TVs could worsen the problem. Nonetheless, shortages of TAC (Triacetate Cellulose) film is expected to see resolution after the third quarter of 2005. With its current panel capacity already packed, busy third quarter shipments for small and medium size panels are projected to further stretch AUO's operations.
