Display - Seiko Epson Launches 47, 57-inch RPTVs in Japan
June 09, 2005
Seiko Epson released its 47" and 57" RPTVs (Rear Projection TVs) in early June 2005. The 47" model is priced at 298,000 yen (US$2,777.3; US$1=107.3 yen), which translates into around 6,300 yen (US$58.7) per inch, less than half of the per-inch price of Sharp's 45" LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV, slated to hit the market in August of 2005.

The models, consuming just 198 watts of power, are more energy efficient than either LCD or PDP (Plasma Display Panel) TVs, yet have resolutions that support high definition broadcasting. Seiko Epson is eyeing at 15,000 sales volume in the fiscal year of 2005, which is more than seven-fold of that registered in 2004.
