Display - Orion Electric Spins Off OLED Business
May 26, 2005
Following the acquisition by Matlin Patterson, Korean display maker Orion Electric has severed its OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) business to form new company Orion OLED. The new maker will possess a capital of one billion KRW (US$ 997,108; US$1=1,002.9 KRW), maintain around 150 workers, and acquire the 90% stake in Orion PDP (Plasma Display Panel) currently held by Orion Electric. Orion OLED and Orion PDP are expected to respectively generate revenues of 40 billion KRW (US$39.9 million) and 36.8 billion KRW (US$36.7 million) in 2005. It is believed that most of the 120 billion KRW (US$119.7 million) Matlin Patterson plans to invest into Orion will go to the OLED sector. Orion Electric, with a capital of five billion KRW (US$5 million) and workforce of 1,300, is anticipated to concentrate on cathode ray tube production in the future.
