May 26, 2005
According to a survey by JEITA, the total shipment volume of high-end computing systems, including main frames, middle range computers and workstations, showed a tendency of growth in 2004.
Shipment volume of servers, otherwise termed mid-range computers in Japan, reached 432.322 units in 2004, growth of 9% from 2003; value stood at 654.5 billion Yen (US$6.1 billion; US$1=107.72 Yen), a decline of 1%.
The shipment volume of workstations in 2004 was 100.278 units, which was an increase of 48% from 2003; shipment value was 48.2 billion Yen (US$447.4 billion), a decline of 3%. Workstations with a price below one million Yen (US$9283.3) experienced a rise of over 50% both in volume and value. Units with a price above one million saw a considerable slowdown in volume gains, although growth still amounted to a two figure rate. Revenue showed a decline.
Main frames differed from the other two as shipment volume slightly decreased. Shipment volume in 2004 was 1,212 units, a decline of 2%. The corresponding value was 246.7 billion Yen (US$2.3 billion), a fall of 6%.
