Consumer Electronics - Sharp Rolls out First 8MP CCD
November 01, 2004
Sharp has successfully developed an 8MP (Megapixel) CCD (Charge Coupled Device) for small digital cameras. This enhanced camera module, measuring 9mm diagonally, is no bigger than conventional 4MP or 6MP CCD, thus enabling manufacturers to produce 8MP digital camera without drastic design changes. While featuring resolutions similar to those in DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) digital cameras, this model is also capable of capturing video images at 30 frames per second.

Samples of the CCD modules, priced at 8,400 Yen (US$79.2; US$1=106.1) were already shipped in late October 2004. Sharp is expected to ramp up mass production in January 2005, with a monthly capacity of 200,000 units.
