According to the statistics from Taiwan's NCC (National Communications Commission), there were around 6.86 million 5G subscribers in Taiwan as of the end of January 2023, the Commercial Daily reported on March 17. With an additional 150,000 and 160,000 new subscribers added per month in recent months, Taiwan will have over 7 million 5G subscribers by the end of March 2023. As of the end of January, the total number of mobile users of Chunghwa Telecom surpassed 11.06 million, 2.5 million of which were 5G users. Chunghwa Telecom has the largest number of 5G users in Taiwan, followed by Taiwan Mobile with 1.54 million. MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute) predicts that global smartphone shipment volume will decline from 1.2 billion units in 2022 to 1.16 million units in 2023. However, 5G smartphone shipments' global share is expected to break over 60% of the total smartphone shipments. It is estimated that global 5G smartphone shipments will grow from 650 million in 2022 to 840 million in 2023, up nearly 30% year-on-year. Established in 1987, MIC is a division of III (Institute for Information Industry), a major government think tank, and one of the leading IT research institutes in Taiwan.
