Taiwan's Inventec recently announced that it will join hands with NXP Semiconductors, with an aim to expand its reach to automotive electronics, the Commercial Daily News reported on August 5. The ecosystem is reportedly to focus on five modules, namely UWB (Ultra-Wideband) smart car access systems, central gateways, automotive-grade servers, smart cockpit, and automotive-grade wireless chargers. Under the tie-up, Inventec aims to achieve the goal of the "server in car" that helps transform a car into a mobile office while NXP Semiconductors will help Taiwan establish a complete ecosystem for automotive electronics. Inventec currently has production bases in Taiwan, Shanghai, Chongqing, Mexico, and the Czech Republic with its Chinese bases focusing on Chinese customers and its Mexico base will serve mainly its US automakers. The company is set to produce automotive electronics some time this year by adding new production lines and automotive R&D engineers from 400 to 600. In addition to Inventec, NXP Semiconductors has also recently forged a strategic partnership with Foxconn for automotive electronics. Global server market volume is estimated to reach 13.7 million units in 2022, growing at 5.2% year-on-year, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute). MIC also stated that global automotive semiconductors shipment volume topped 52.4 billion units in 2021, up 29.8% compared to 2020. The growth in 2021 was attributed mainly to inventory pileups because of concerns over global chip shortage. Established in 1987, MIC is a division of III (Institute for Information Industry), a major government think tank, and one of the leading IT research institutes in Taiwan.
