China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) recently announced that the number of 5G base stations reached 1.85 million units by the end of June, 300,000 of which were installed in the second quarter of 2022, the Sina.com reported on July 19. China aims to build an addition of 300,000 5G base stations in the second half of 2022, totaling 5G base stations in China to over two million units this year. Meanwhile, the MIIT also stated that China's 5G mobile users already reached 455 million by the end of June. The 5G network applications have covered the areas of IT, healthcare, education, and transportation industries with over 20,000 5G applications in place. In addition, there are more than 3,100 5G industrial internet projects currently under construction, 700 of which were kicked off in the second quarter of 2022. In the first half of 2022 alone, China's total investments into telecom fixed assets grew 24.6% year-on-year to 189.4 billion RMB (US$28.4 billion; US$1=6.66 RMB), 89.88 billion RMB (US$13.5 billion) of which was allocated for 5G, up 29.6% year-on-year. 

Following the launch of 5G network in 2019, China aims to commercialize its 6G networks by 2030, with a transmission rate 50 times faster than 5G technology. To this end, Chinese leading telecom operator China Mobile took the initiate by releasing the world's first 6G Network Architecture Technology White Paper this June while Huawei recently also announced to launch its 6G networks in 2030.  The research on 6G standards will likely to begin as early as 2023 or 2024, according to the same source. 

Taiwan's government-backed research institute MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute) predicts that global 5G smartphone shipments will top around 710 million units in 2022 with the penetration rate of around 52.2%. Taiwanese smartphone shipments account for around 26% of the global total in 2022. Established in 1987, MIC is a division of III (Institute for Information Industry), a major government think tank, and one of leading IT research institutes in Taiwan.
