China Accounts for 70% of the World’s 5G Base Stations

China’s MIIT (Ministry of Information Industry Technology) recently announced that China has had more than 819,000 5G base stations by the end of the first quarter of 2021, the Commercial Daily reported on May 27. China accounts for 70% of the world’s total 5G base stations. Thus far, there are about 280 million smartphone users connecting to 5G networks in China, taking up 80% of the global 5G smartphone users. Chinese operators added a total of 69.5 million 5G subscribers in the first quarter alone, 23.8 million of which were from China Mobile, 24.7 million from China Telecom, and 21 million from China Unicom. Global 5G smartphone shipment volume is estimated to see a whopping 125.3% growth and reach 538.2 million units in 2021, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a major government think tank and leading IT research institute in Taiwan. MIC further predicts global 5G smartphone shipment volume will top 1.1 billion units in 2025, representing a 29.4% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) for the period 2020-2025.
