China to Provide 200 Million Households Gigabit-speed Fiber Optic and 5G Network Services by End-2021
April 09, 2021

China’s MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) recently announced that it will strive to complete the “dual gigabit” plan for both fiber optic and 5G networks by 2023, the Sina.net reported on April 8. According to the plan, China will ensure 200 million households in at least 20 cities by the end of this year and 400 million households in 100 cities by the end of 2023 to have access to gigabit-speed fiber-optic networks. In addition, the country will also newly add 600,000 5G network stations in 2021. Thus far, China has 718,000 5G base stations across China. China aims to complete its 5G network construction during the 14th Five-year Plan for the period 2021-2025. Asia is the largest fiber optic network market, accounting for over 80% of the global fiber optic user base, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a major government think tank and leading IT research institute in Taiwan. China leads the market with over 400 million user base in 2020. MIC estimates global fiber optic user base will reach 516 million in 2021 and top 550 million by 2023.
