Chunghwa Telecom, Kymco Join Forces to Expand Southeast Asian Business Opportunities
March 23, 2021

Taiwan’s leading telco CHT (Chunghwa Telecom) and Taiwan's motorbike brand Kymco recently announced that they will team up to tap Southeast Asian market opportunities, the Commercial Daily news reported on March 22. CHT revealed earlier in January about setting up a JV (Joint Venture) with Thailand-based CAT Telecom for 5G services, targeting mainly enterprises. Under the agreement, CHT and CAT Telecom holds 75% and 25% stake in the JV. In addition, the 5G services will operate on 700- and 850-megahertz spectrum ranges owned by CAT Telecom. According to GSA statistics, the number of global 5G users will top 1.8 billion by 2025, accounting for 21% of global mobile base; the number of 5G devices available reached 208 as of January 2021, representing a whopping 260% growth compared to January 2020.
In addition, CHT has also set up a JV with Kymco and Delta Electronics with an aim to export plant-level IT solutions to Southeast Asia. Last year, Kymco invested US$30 million in Grab, Southeast Asia’s biggest ride-hailing service.
