India to Impose Ban on 59 Chinese Apps, including TikTok and WeChat
January 28, 2021

Following the first ban in June, India’s MoEIT (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) recently announced that it will likely to impose ban on 59 Chinese apps, including video app TikTok and WeChat, Reuters reported on January 26. According to the Times of India, the ban will be permanent. The decision has been made after the MoEIT reviewed the responses from developers of these 59 apps, including ByteDance, Tencent, and Alibaba, who were given 77 questions on issues such as compliance and privacy. The government reportedly has sent notices to these companies and informed them the decision. India believes the ban is for the sake of India’s national security and sovereignty. TikTok has been evaluating the notice while other companies have declined to comment. Amid rising tensions between India and China in the border, this will surely deteriorate the relationship between two countries. In last September, India already banned 118 Chinese mobile apps, including Tencent’s videogame PUBG and no decision has been reached since then.
