China’s MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) recently announced that China has shipped a total of 144 million 5G smartphones as of November 30, 2020, accounting for 51.4% of total smartphone shipments, finance.sina.com reported on December 24. During January and November this year, China launched 417 new smartphones, 199 or 47.7% of which were 5G smartphones. Meanwhile, with an increasing number of 5G users, more than 200 million devices have been connected to 5G networks this year in China. Thus far, China has up to 700,000 5G base stations, with 580,000 newly-built ones. Shipment volume of the global smartphone industry is estimated at 1.36 billion units in 2021, 39.8% or 539 million of which will be 5G smartphones, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a major government think tank and a leading research institute in Asia.
