Taiwan’s TCL Plans to Set up 8.6-Generation IPS LCD Production Line; Samsung to Refocus on Quantum Dot Display and OLED
November 12, 2020

Taiwanese TCL recently announced that the company plans to set up 8.6G IPS (In-Plane Switching) LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) production line, the Commercial Times reported on November 11. The new line is slated for mass production in September 2022 with a monthly capacity of 180,000 units. This August the company completed the acquisition of Samsung’s 8.5-generation LCD production line in Suzhou, China. To date, the company has three 8.5-generation LCD production lines, two 6-generaiton lines, and two 11-generation lines. All these lines are primarily based on their VA-type or AMOLED technologies. On the contrast, Samsung had already decided to suspend LCD production lines by the end of 2020 amid falling demand for LCD panels and declining panel prices as Chinese competitors have been ramping up production. Samsung runs two LCD production lines in South Korean and another two LCD factories in China. Instead, the company seems likely to refocus on production lines based on other technologies such as Quantum Dot (QD) and OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode to produce QD-enabled OLED, according to Reuters.
