China’s MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) recently unveiled that Chinese 5G smartphones achieved over 100 million in shipment volume as of September 30, 2020, the United Daily News reported on October 23. As of September 30, the accumulative number of 5G base stations registered 690,000 and the number of connected devices reached 160 million. In July alone, nearly 80% of 5G smartphones were from China. Global smartphone shipment volume is projected to reach 1.18 billion units in 2020, down 18.1% year-on-year, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a government IT think tank and leading IT research institute in Asia. If the coronavirus outbreak is under control, MIC expects global smartphone shipments will register over 10% year-on-year growth to 1.3 billion units in 2021.
