NVidia Plans to Buy Arm from SoftBank for US$40 Billion
September 14, 2020

SoftBank recently announced that the company will sell Arm to NVidia for US$40 billion, the CBNC reported on September 13. Under the agreement, NVidia will pay to SoftBank US$21.5 billion in stock and US$12 billion in cash, making this deal the largest acquisition in the semiconductor industry thus far. SoftBank acquired Arm in 2016 for US$31 billion. Arm designs the architecture for mobile chips used in almost every mobile device, including Apple’s iPhones, Samsung’s Android phones, and in Qualcomm chips. In recently years, Microsoft has made an Arm-based Surface and Arm-based version of Windows while Apple has decided to shift future Macs from Intel chips to Arm-based chips. NVidia stated that Arm will continue its open-licensing model and customer neutrality. With its leadership in GPU (Graphics Processing Units), NVidia expects the deal will help the company seek opportunities through Arm’s vest network from smartphones to servers and to the next stage of Ai computing. Over the years, NVidia has been doing well in GPUs that power AI for computers, robots, and autonomous vehicles. The deal will likely invite intense regulatory scrutiny though.
