Following the US’ decision to impose new restrictions to disrupt Huawei’s access to important components in May, Britain recently announced that the country would ban equipment provided by Huawei for its 5G networks after 2020, the Commercial Times reported on July 15. The existing equipment already installed would need to be removed from the UK 5G network by 2027. However, the existing equipment for 2G, 3G, and 4G networks could stay. The main reason for the UK to reverse its January decision to allow Huawei a limited role in building the country’s 5G networks is also due to security concerns. Huawei, which has operated in the UK for 20 years, will be significantly affected as Europe is a key market for the company that accounted for 24% of its sales last year. The global shipments of 5G CPE in 2019 reached approximately 5.8 million units, and are estimated to grow by more than 60% in 2020 to approximately 10 million units, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a government think tank and IT research Institute in Taiwan.
