Chinese 5G Smartphone Shipments Top 13.7 Million in 2019

China’s MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) recently announced that the total 5G smartphone shipments in China topped over 13 million units, to 13.77 million, as of the end of 2019, the United Daily News reported on January 2020. With China’s 5G homegrown smartphone ICs being commercialized, 35 smartphones were granted internet access licenses in China with 130,000 5G base stations being set up. According to MIIT, the total revenue of three major telecom operators in China reached 130 million RMB (US$18.8 million; US$1 = 6.9 RMB) in 2019. In the same year, fixed asset investment by three state-owned telecom operators and China Tower, a state-owned telecom tower company, totaled 360 billion RMB (US$52.2 billion), the Sina News reported on February 17. Meanwhile, a total of 8.4 million base stations were launched, including 1.74 new ones, and 64.7% of which were 4G base stations in 2019. On top of that, China Mobile recently declared that the company has had 74,000 5G base stations and 6.7 million 5G service subscribers as of the end of January 2020.
