Taiwan’s NCC (National Communications Commission) is scheduled to start 5G spectrum auctions on December 10, 2019, with an aim to build an optimal 5G networking environment in Taiwan, the Economic Daily News reported on December 5. Following the completion of the auctions, 5G license issuance will be done by the end of January 2020.  Before the October 3 deadline, seven application forms were filed and after two months of review, five major telecom operators in Taiwan, including Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone Telecommunications, Taiwan Star Telecom, and Asia Pacific Telecom were qualified to take part in the auctions.  The Commission is set to auction three spectrum frequency ranges: 3.5 GHz, 28GHz, and 1.8GHz. Of the total 2790MHz in bandwidth, 270 MHz will be released from the frequency range of 3.5GHz with a floor price of NT$24.3 billion (US$810 million), 2500GHz from 28GHz with a floor price of NT$2.5 billion (US$83 million), and 2x10MHz from 1.8GHz with a floor price of NT$3.2 billion (US$106 million).
After consulting with the NCC, Taiwan’s MOTC (Ministry of Transportation and Communications) is reportedly to launch the second round of 5G spectrum auctions in 2023.
