MediaTek Opens New 5G R&D Center in Taiwan

MediaTek recently inaugurated its new 5G R&D center located at the Hsinchu Science Park, boasting to be the largest of its kind in Asia, the United Daily News reported on September 20. With a total investment of NT$5 billion (US$161 million) and located near the company’s headquarters, this new center will be dedicated to the development of 5G chip technologies, housing the company’s high-speed computing data center, and 5G teams and labs, including a 24/7 simulation lab to test 5G devices and base stations. First products embedded with MediaTek’s 5G chips are slated for launch in the first quarter of 2020. To date, the company has invested a total of NT$100 billion (US$3.23 billion) into 5G R&D, including this NT$5 billion center and a team of 3,000 engineers.
