Following a report by Financial Times in January 2019 that Taiwan’s Pegatron has planned to relocate the production lines from China to India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, the company recently announced its new plant in the island of Batam, Indonesia, will begin operations in June this year, according to Reuters on May 28. The company has earmarked US$300 million for this new plant which will assemble MacBooks and iPads for Apple, with an aim to avoid high tariffs imposed on China by the US. In addition, the new plant is a jointly set up by Pegatron and an Indonesian electronics company PT Sat Nusapersada. In addition to assembling for Apple, the company also starts manufacturing home appliances in partnership with PT Sat Nusapersada at Batam’s Batamindo Industrial Park.
