Taiwanese Compal Electronics recently announced that it plans to invest NTD 60 million (USD 1.95 million; USD 1= NTD) into a new biotech startup called Hipposcreen in cooperation with NTUT (National Taipei University of Technology), the Economic Daily News reported on April 19. Under the tie-up, Compal is in charge of providing technology and manufacturing support to new startup, led by the research developers from NTUT that target depression research, with an aim to develop a depression detection system leveraging algorithm of AI. The system is able to help doctors better detect depressive disorder brain waves, slated to hit the market at the end of 2019 or the beginning of 2020. According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, Taiwan had more than 1.27 million people taking antidepressants in 2017.
