Taiwan and Korea Forge Strategic Alliance for 5G

Taiwan recently announced that its TW5G Alliance-CHT Pilot Team has entered into a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Korea's 5G Forum, with an aim to jointly speed up 5G commercialization and develop 5G applications for the vertical markets, the China Times reported on January 11. The TW5G Alliance, with over 40 participants like Changhua Telecom, MediaTek, Qualcomm, Intel, Quanta, ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute), III (Institute for Information Industry), ASUS, HTC, and Sercomm, is set to kick off pre-commercial 5G service together sometime in 2020. 5G Forum, on the other hand, has over 30 participants such as Korea Telecom, SK Telecom, and LG Uplus, Samsung, and LG, and has plans to provide 5G commercial services dedicatedly for the consumer market in March 2019. The cooperation will focus on platform and application levels, including development and promotion of 5G vertical applications such as smart factory, smart transportation, IoV (Internet of Vehicle), and IoT (Internet of Things).
