Taiwan Establishes a Sharing Economic Association
August 02, 2018

Taiwan set up a sharing economic association called SEAT (Sharing Economic Association, Taiwan) on July 25, the Economic Daily News reported on July 26. Since Taiwanese consumers have been very receptive to sharing economy, the total value of the Taiwanese e-commerce industry was up to NTD 230 billion (USD 7.5 billion; USD 1=NTD 30.6) last year. The members of the SEAT include both domestic and foreign companies such as AsiaYo, Gogovan, Lalamove, Uber, USPACE, WeMo, ZipCar, etc. Compared to the US, China, and other Southeast Asian countries, the Taiwanese government however is relatively conservative towards sharing economy, given the lack of updates in the Taiwanese legislation and tariff policies. For this reason, Taiwan's National Development Council has called for urgent action to negotiate with other government agencies to loosen the 338 Act in the hope of making a more beneficial sharing economic environment for consumers, companies, and the government.
