August 02, 2018

Taiwanese Executive Yuan recently announced that it has approved the annual IT budget for next year worth around NTD 119 billion (USD 3.9 billion; USD 1=NTD 30.6), reported by the Economic Daily News on July 27. The budget has been allocated for general IT, advanced research, AI (Artificial Intelligence), and space technology development projects. Compared to 2018, the 2019 budget will be increased by 7.7%. The Taiwanese Board of Science originally set a budget worth NTD116.3 billion (USD3.8 billion) merely for general IT and advanced research development projects, up 5.5% compared to last year. Taiwan's general IT budget for 2019 will continue to focus on the 10 major categories: Asian Silicon Valley, smart machinery, green energy, biomedical industry, national defense industry, new agriculture, circular economy, digital economy, technology for cultural, and IC design and semiconductor. Except 30% for fundamental R&D projects, the remaining 70% of the IT budget will go to Taiwanese government’s 5+2 Industrial Transformation Plan, and National DIGI+ Plan, which includes some top IT trends such as AI, IoT (Internet of Things), and Big Data.
