Semiconductor packaging and testing service provider ASE (Advanced Semiconductor Engineering) plans to invest NT$100 billion to NT$200 billion (US3.2 billion to US$6.4 billion; $ US$1=NT$31.092) over the next three years in Kaohsiung, where the company has established a production base, to boost capacity and continuously develop SiP (System in Package) technology, reported Economic Daily News on April 9. The plan is ASE's largest investment so far, showing its optimistic outlook for mobile device demand, including wearables, IoT (Internet of Things) products, driverless cars, and drones. As ASE currently provides packaging and testing services to Apple, the capacity expansion has raised speculations that ASE is set to secure more orders from Apple, including Apple Watch.
