China-based smartphone maker Xiaomi announced that it is migrating international users' data from Beijing servers to Amazon AWS data centers in the United States, and Singapore, reported Tech in Asia on October 23. The migration process is taking place in three phases: (1) for e-commerce platforms, the process has already begun and will be complete by the end of October; (2) for MIUI services, the migration is slated for completion by the end of 2014; (3) for markets Amazon AWS services aren't available, like Brazil and India, expansion of local servers will begin in 2015. Xiaomi said that the move is primarily to reduce latency and optimize Xiaomi's user experience, especially for its customers outside of China.
