Samsung announced that it is going to spend around US$14.7 billion on its largest semiconductor production facility so far, which will begin construction in Pyeongtaek in the first half of 2015, reported Korea's Electronic Times Internet on October 7. The new plant will create around 150,000 job opportunities and is slated for operation in the second half of 2017—a year earlier than originally scheduled. The decision to put forward its investment schedule is backed by the steady growth of chip demand, both for IoT (Internet of Things) and robot applications, said the company. Pyeongtaek plant will make either logic or memory chips, yet to be decided by Samsung.
