Chimei Materials, a Taiwan-based manufacturers of polarizer films used in LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels, said that it plans to invest US$298 million to build two polarizer film production lines in Kunshan, China, reported Taiwan's Central News Agency on June 6. The first stage of its investment plan has been approved by Taiwan's MOEA (Ministry of Economic Affairs) and will be kicked off immediately as the funding is ready. The new facility is set to begin mass production in the first quarter of 2016 and is expected to increase Chimei Materials' overall production capacity by over 50%. Since 2014, the Chinese government has lifted up the tariffs on imported polarizer films from 6% to 8% in order to protect the domestic materials industry.
