Abstract

Large enterprises have extensive resources, a wide business scope, and well-established management systems, thus are more receptive than small and medium enterprises to the adoption of new information and communications technology. To better understand Taiwanese large enterprises' demand for IT systems over the next two years, during the period from December 2005 to January 2006 MIC investigated 5,000 largest enterprises in Taiwan in terms of their revenue. These companies were categorized by their revenue and the industries to which the enterprises belonged; the survey examined their network applications and their adoption of IT systems. 600 completed questionnaires were returned. This report will examine the results obtained in the survey.

The survey results show that large enterprises in Taiwan have already achieved a relatively high level of e-enablement. As regards network applications, over 85% of large enterprises have their own website, nearly 60% use WLAN, and 50% - 60% have adopted VPN and VoIP. By contrast, only 24.8% of large enterprises with their own website have established a B2B or B2C e-commerce capability. The adoption rates for EIP and EIM are 40.0% and 26.0% respectively, indicating that there is still considerable room for growth in these market segments. ERP is the most widely used business application system among large enterprises in Taiwan; 67.7% of enterprises have established an ERP system. The adoption rates for CRM, SCM, BI, e-learning, and BPM are all much lower, at around 10% to 20%. The main focus of demand for new business application system establishment in the next few years will be on CRM and BI; 14.4% of large enterprises are planning to establish a CRM system within the next two years, and 12.3% are planning to adopt BI. Companies in different industries have different needs in terms of networking applications and business application systems. By and large, the IT and electronics industry still has the highest adoption rates for both network applications and business application systems. However, as competition grows more intense and the pace of overseas expansion quickens, the general manufacturing industry has also started to display higher demand for IT applications; this is the industry in which the next wave of e-enablement will be concentrated. In the service sector, the financial services industry has been most aggressive in the pursuit of e-enablement, and has posted the highest levels of expenditure on IT. The development of new business areas and the imposition of new regulatory requirements in the last few years has stimulated an increase in demand for IT applications among financial services providers, making this industry another focus of attention.
