NEC and Alcatel-Lucent have signed a turnkey contract to jointly supply equipment for the Asia America Gateway, a 20,000-kilometer undersea fiber-optic cable network between Southeast Asia and the US West Coast. Pursuant to the US$500 million contract, NEC and Alcatel-Lucent will manage the technical deployment of the network from beginning to end, including design, manufacturing, procurement, installation, and integration. Slated for completion in late 2008, the network is a joint enterprise by a consortium of 17 companies across nations, the latest member of which is StarHub of Singapore.
