TD-SCDMA Update

-      China Mobile plans to set up a TD-SCDMA business unit in charge of the company's operations in this field, including network construction and deployment. Personnel and assets from China Mobile's TD-SCDMA trial networks in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Qinhuangdao, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Xiamen will be transferred to this new unit.

 

-      Results of the equipment tender for China Mobile's TD-SCDMA infrastructure construction have been revealed. ZTE won approximately 52% of the tender value and will supply equipment in Beijing, Tianjin, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Qinhuangdao, and Xiamen. Datang, cooperating with Alcatel Shanghai Bell, was awarded approximately 27% of the tender, including the right to build networks in Shanghai and Guangzhou. TD-Tech and Potevio secured 10% and 7% respectively. Ericsson is expected to have a limited share in the overall contract as well.

 

-      Korea's SK Telecom has inaugurated its Access Research Center, a TD-SCDMA test bed, in Bundang on the outskirts of Seoul. The test bed comprises eleven base stations, provided by ZTE and Datang Mobile, and a core network supplied by Samsung. SK Telecom plans to carry out tests on interoperability as well as server and terminal platform functions in this center. 3G multimedia and convergent service development is also part of the plan.
