China Unicom to Spend 10 Bln RMB to Upgrade GSM Network

China Unicom recently announced that it plans to spend more than 10 billion RMB (US$1.3 billion; US$1 = 7.9 RMB) upgrading its GSM network to GPRS, also known as a 2.5G network. According to a Xinhua news report, the network equipment used for this project can be easily upgraded to 3G networks, as the company is positioning itself for 3G licenses in China.
