Japanese 3G Subs Reach 48.3 Million

According to Japan's TCA, Japanese mobile phone subscribers hit 91.7 million at the end of the first quarter of 2006, up 2% sequentially. 2G users amounted to about 42.6 million, down 8% sequentially and 23% year-on-year, while 3G subscribers reached 48.3 million, up 12% sequentially and 59% year-on-year. Among 3G subscribers, about 26.5 million use WCDMA phones, and about 21.8 million use CDMA 2000 1x systems, up 18% and 6% sequentially. In addition, nearly 80 million subscribers accessed the Internet through mobile phones in the first quarter of 2006, an increase of 4.6 million compared to the first quarter of 2005.
