February 16, 2006
JEITA announced on February 14 that domestic mobile phone shipments in Japan amounted to 44.86 million units in 2005, representing growth of 3.8% in comparison with 2004. According to JEITA, this growth was mainly stimulated by replacement demand as new phones allowing consumers to make electronic payments or watch television hit the market in 2005. Domestic shipments of PHS (Personal Handyphone System) handsets experienced a 2.4-fold increase in 2005, reaching 1.46 million units.
