Abstract
In view of the trend of network convergence, numerous mergers and acquisitions among communication chipset vendors have taken place. At the beginning of 2011, major 3G chipset vendor Qualcomm announced the acquisition of major Wi-Fi chipset vendor Atheros for US$3.1 billion. The acquisition deal is expected to close in the first half of 2011. Upon completion, Atheros is projected to be incorporated into Qualcomm's Networking & Connectivity Group. This research will look into the impacts brought by the acquisition deal on the communications chipset industry.
